BRIEF: The representation of queer characters in media must be held to a higher standard. Most popular media containing LGBTQ+ characters assigns those characters to one of three tropes: a queer character dies, a queer character is involved in an affair, and/or a queer character’s storyline is dependent on the character coming out or hiding in the closet. Cisgender and heterosexual characters are allowed a multitude of storylines that are unique from work-to-work. Queer characters must be given the same treatment.
The Qllection is a series of curated media sets that celebrate queer characters who break the mold and tell original, unpredictable stories. The first installation, Fiction+, is a collection of twelve pieces of fiction in the form of novels, graphic novels, tv shows, films, podcast series, and a video game.
